OUR MISSION
As Holland Heights Church, we seek to love God and to love people by being a community of disciples who make disciples as we live our lives in the places God leads us.
LOVE GOD AND LOVE PEOPLE
God gave His people, the Israelites, this command, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” (Deuteronomy 6:4-5)
When asked about the most important commandment, Jesus confirmed His Father’s instructions from the Old Testament and added a second when he replied, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matthew 22:37b-39)
BE DISCIPLES WHO MAKE DISCIPLES
After his resurrection, Jesus came to His disciples. Amidst their worship and doubt, He said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)
Why do we love God?
We love God because He loved us first and while we were still sinners, He sent His Son to die for us. (John 3:16; Romans 5:8; 1 John 4:19)
We love God because He created us to be in a relationship with Him. (Leviticus 26:12; John 1:14)
How do we love God?
We love God by putting Him and His Kingdom first as we seek Him with our heart, soul, mind, and strength. (Deuteronomy 5:7; Deuteronomy 6:5; Matthew 6:33; Luke 10:27)
We love God by denying ourselves and obeying Him. (Exodus 20:1-11; Joshua 22:5; Matthew 16:24; John 14:15, 21; 1 John 5:3)
Why do we love people?
We love people because God is the source of love and His great love for us enables us to love others. (1 John 4:7-12)
We love people because Jesus commanded us to and set an example for us. (Matthew 22:39; John 13:34-35)
How do we love people?
We love people by displaying God’s love through humility, kindness, compassion, patience, and generosity toward others. (1 Corinthians 13:4-7; Ephesians 4:32; Philippians 2:3)
We love people by helping them see their need for a Savior and pointing them to God’s grace and His truth as we strive to live together in community. (Psalm 145:8; Acts 2:42-47; Acts 3:19; Ephesians 4:25)
What does it mean to BE a disciple?
Being a disciple means following Jesus’ example by intentionally and continually building our personal relationship with God through spending time in Scripture and in prayer. (Mark 1:35; Luke 4:1-13; Luke 22:39-44; John 8:31-32)
Being a disciple means obeying God’s leading in our life day by day and trusting His grace in our imperfection. (Matthew 7:24; Matthew 25:38-40; Mark 6:31-32; Luke 22:54-62; John 21:15-19; Philippians 2:12-13)
Why do we want to BE disciples?
We want to be disciples out of our gratitude for God’s grace for us and His desire to be in relationship with us. (Luke 15:11-32; John 3:16; Ephesians 2:8-9; 1 Timothy 2:3-4; 2 Peter 3:9)
We want to be disciples in order to learn to follow Jesus in our life and to help others do the same. (Matthew 4:19; Matthew 28:18-20)
How do we MAKE disciples?
We make disciples by walking alongside others as together we discern the truth as revealed in Scripture so that we can all follow and obey God better. (Acts 2:42-47; 2 Timothy 3:16-17)
We make disciples by being in prayer for and with each other. (Ephesians 6:18; Colossians 1:9; James 5:16)
Why do we want to MAKE disciples?
We want to make disciples so that other people can have a relationship with our loving and gracious Savior who offers an abundant life and an eternal hope for the future. (John 5:24; John 10:10; Romans 6:23; Romans 10:13)
We want to make disciples in order to live out Jesus’ great commission to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth. (Matthew 28:19-20: Acts 1:8)
